8 Things you can do at home to look after your skin

Whilst we have a range of professional facial treatments for you to enjoy in the salon, there are a few lifestyle changes you can implement at home between your visits to us, as what you do at home is just as important in order to achieve and maintain results.

Once you can see and feel the benefits you will never look back!

Cleansing – It is important to cleanse your skin each day even if you haven’t worn make up. You will be surprised just how many times we touch our face throughout the day without realising. We are exposed to a lot of pollutants in the air that we do not see, so every evening, imagine you are washing the day away!

Drink your daily water intake – This is something we are all guilty of, not drinking enough! A lack of water intake leads to dehydration and this can have a detrimental effect on your skins overall appearance.

Keeping yourself hydrated increases blood flow to the skin, brightens the complexion, generates a more youthful appearance and assists in flushing unwanted toxins to alleviate breakouts.

Limit alcohol consumption– We all like to enjoy a drink or two but due to the diuretic effects of alcohol, our body finds it hard to break down the negative chemical reaction which occurs within the body. Drinking water before, during and after aids the elimination of these harmful toxins.

Drinking excessively can also have an impact on our mental and physical well- being as well as aggressing skin conditions such as acne and rosacea due to an inflammatory response.

As with anything, all in moderation, cheers to that!

Protect against UV exposure – It is particularly important during the Spring and Summer months to ensure you are using an SPF daily. Over exposure to harmful UV rays leads to a break down in collagen which provides our skin with strength.

Making sure we are getting enough vitamin D is vital for our skin’s normal function so take the opportunity to get outside and enjoy your garden or go out for a walk whilst keeping your skin protected.

Eat a well balanced diet- Anti oxidant rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, oily fish and nuts provide our skin with the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients that we need and a lack of these in our diet can reflect in our skin.

We all have a vice but over consumption of foods high in saturated fats and sugar promotes pre mature aging and make current skin conditions worse which goes without saying, you are what you eat!

Participate in regular exercise – It may be hard to keep yourself motivated or schedule fitness into your daily routine but the effect it has not only on our mental wellbeing, but our skin is highly beneficial.

Our body excretes toxins from our body during physical activity and an increase in circulation stimulates oxygen and nutrients within our skin cells, creating that all important glow!

Practice a good sleep routine- Are you getting on average 8 hours sleep every night? Our skin is at its optimum whilst we sleep and our melatonin levels increase, this has an antioxidant effect on our skin and regeneration takes place.

Sleep deprivation causes blood vessels to dilate and reduced blood flow leading to those unwanted dark circles, puffiness around the eyes and a dull complexion.

Eliminate Smoking– The toxins released during smoking restrict blood flow and oxygen supply to the skin which hinders the function of skin cells and leads to a sallow complexion.

It also depletes vitamin C which is essential to our skins repair and slows down collagen and elastin production resulting in signs of premature aging.

Follow a good skin care routine– Our job is to advise you on the best solution to your skin concerns respective to your current lifestyle. Going back to basics is a great start with a skin specific cleanser, toner and moisturiser and in synergy, improve the overall condition of your skin.

If you unhappy with your current skin care regime, or unsure what products are right for you please speak to your therapist who will be more than happy to talk through your concerns and guide you in the right direction.
